Wallingford
Founded in 1883 and annexed by Seattle in 1891, Wallingford grew during the early 1900's, when it first took off as a working-class suburb of Seattle.
Today, this is a community that cares about its future. Team Wallingford is the name of the neighborhood association that keeps an eye out for the development of this area. The Wallingford Center, a three-story wooden schoolhouse, is one example of how the community altered the course of the neighborhood's development, turning a neoclassical building -- formerly the Interlake Public School -- into shops and restaurants.
When the local energy plant closed in 1956, Wallingford became the first neighborhood in the world to recycle an industrial factory into a public park. Today, people come to enjoy Gas Work Park's open, grassy hills with views across Lake Union towards Seattle. People also enjoy Wallingford Playfield and the Burke-Gilman Trail, which runs through here along the shores of Lake Washington and back towards Bothell, Woodinville and Redmond.
